Nigeria's main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday night declared former Vice President Atiku Abubakar the winner of the presidential run-off election.
Atiku won the election with 371 votes, defeating Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike who came second with 237 votes.
Prior to the election, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and former prominent banker Hayatu-Deen withdrew from Atiku, ordering his supporters to vote for Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku Abubakar is an experienced politician who has been dragging his feet for many years. Hasalima was one of the founding members of the PDP.
Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946 in the northeastern state of Adamawa, and was a prominent Nigerian politician and billionaire.
Since the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, Atiku Abubakar has been the 11th Vice President of Nigeria, under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007.
He owns the prestigious ABTI University, American University of Nigeria in his home state of Adamawa.
His oil company, Intels Nigeria Limited, operates in Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe.
Atiku Abubakar became involved in politics in 1993 and was close to former military vice president General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua.
He has been involved in various parties since entering politics.
Atiku Abubakar was elected governor of Adamawa State in 1998, although he was later nominated by Obasanjo as his deputy.
Since then, this is the third time Atiku Abubakar has run for the presidency, although he has stood for re-election several times.
In 2007, he was nominated by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and lost to PDP candidate Umaru Musa Yar’adua.
He also contested against Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 but lost.
It is only now that the PDP has bought him to run in the 2023 elections.
